Is The Wealthy Affiliate a scam or not? This is the subject that we are going to discuss in today’s post!
Now please bear with me and read the whole post in order to have an informed opinion before you decide to join or not to join Wealthy Affiliate! 🙂
My experience with Wealthy Affiliate
I will start by saying that I am and I’ve been a member for almost a year now on Wealthy Affiliate.
Don’t jump too quickly to conclusions!
I won’t push WA down your throat! In fact in this post I will focus more on the negative side of WA.
So, during the last year, I’ve been scammed a lot. I looked for lots and lots of opportunities to earn money online, but all of them smelled fishy.
One day, I’ve read someone’s website(I can’t remember who it was), and at some point they caught my attention by saying that you can learn to build a successful website.
I joined WA and I have to admit that at first I didn’t had any clue about how to create a website or how to write content or about internet marketing or anything at all.
I didn’t had any experience. I didn’t even knew what a domain is… For real!
And somehow, Kyle and other members welcomed me in this community and a year later I have my own website which is on the front page of every major search engine(Google included) on multiple posts.
But what exactly is The Wealthy Affiliate?
Before we can decide if something is a scam or not, we first need to know what it is exactly, right?
This might sound as common sense, but many people who rush in claiming that it is definitely a scam in fact don’t fully understand what WA really is and how it actually helps you.
Well, Wealthy Affiliate is a large community of online entrepreneurs, with over 800,000 registered accounts. The Wealthy Affiliate’s main purpose is to teach everyone, regardless their age or their experience(*remember, until I’ve joined WA I didn’t had a clue about anything at all- I was literally as confused as Jon Snow in season 4-6 LOL):
- how to select a topic for your business;
- how to create a website in WordPress;
- how to use that website(creating pages/posts/reviews/adding plugins etc.);
- a lot of things about internet marketing, such as: Affiliate Marketing, Email marketing, Social media marketing etc.);
- how to develop your website around your topic;
- how to create quality content for your business(such that your audience will stay and read and buy from you instead of buying from your competitors);
- how to drive traffic to your business;
- how to SEO(Search Engine Optimize) your website, such that it will appear on the front page of the search engines;
- how to monetize your business.
Now, those are the main things that Wealthy Affiliate will teach you. There are literally hundreds and perhaps thousands of blogs and tutorials created by the community members, aside from the main courses that I listed above(which are created by the founders Kyle & Carson). Basically any experienced Entrepreneur can create as many tutorials and blogs as they want. Add that to the fact that Wealthy Affiliate has been around since 2005 and you’ll realize that there are thousands of blogs and tutorials.
The tutorials are about everything you want to know about an online business.
Now, this has been only what Wealthy Affiliate teaches you. Besides those complex tutorials and blogs, WA also provides you with a lot of features to help your business grow such as:
- 2 free websites;
- free hosting;
- keyword tool(used in order to optimize your website in the search engines);
- 12 free themes which are mobile friendly;
- Daily site back up;
- Live chat for 7 first 7 days.
Now all of those features as well as all the lesson that you are going to learn, will cost you exactly $0.
No, it is not a joke and no they won’t request your credit card information!
The common misleading
People join Wealthy Affiliate believing that they will somehow get paid by Wealthy Affiliate. This is happening either because they are not well informed or because they don’t understand the Wealthy Affiliate’s true purpose.
The Wealthy Affiliate’s purpose is to teach anyone how to create a website around their passion( it can be about everything!), how to gain audience and how to earn money from their website.
Their goal is not for you to promote them and to get paid.
The goal is to build a business around your hobby.
Even in the first video of the training, Kyle specifically tells that people should only use the referral program only when they have no idea what niche to select.
Why I dislike Wealthy Affiliate
As I said above, I am not going to praise WA like other people. I want to give you a honest review such that you could take a proper decision of joining or of not joining. Even though, they offer a lot of things for free, I still have a few things which I quite don’t enjoy.
Seeing success stories and seeing that a lot of people earn money and have other achievements on a daily basis can be a good thing. If they can do it, you can do it as well, right?
Even though it helps in boosting your attitude, having hundreds or thousands of success stories is a bad thing.
Your main purpose at Wealthy Affiliate is to work on your website and not to stay and read about other’s success.
I personally have days when I enter WA I see a story that catches my eye and one thing lends to another and I end up reading stories and tutorials for the next 3-4 hours. And just like that I waste half the day if not all the day that I planned to work on my website.
It might seem stupid to you, but once you will encounter this, you will agree with me.
If you spend your time just learning and not putting it in practice, you’ll get nowhere.
You hate Wealthy Affiliate because it has friendly people?! What the hell is wrong with you?
As I mentioned before I hate to spend the time that I planned to work for my website on WA. Most of the time I try to be quick, to ask a few questions on the live chat and to get back to my website.
Over 80% of the time I fail. I usually get people that are friendly and as a social person I continue the discussion until 1 hour passes and until I hate myself.
Imagine that you need to create and publish a post today due to many reasons and that you end up chatting with the whole community instead.
Since Wealthy Affiliate is a membership site, it eventually has a member rank that reflects his activity within the community.
As you can see, today( 3rd of September), I have the rank 271.
The lower the rank, the better.
Now this rank doesn’t help you with anything at all, yet some people are obsessed with getting in the first 200/50/25 since they will get a badge for that.
Ok, but if others want a good rank, what’s your problem?
Well, in order to improve your rank, you have to be more active. Therefore, I had a few times when I created questions and I was expecting answers from experienced Entrepreneurs. However, sometimes, not all the time, I had answers from people stating something like “Good question, I don’t know how to respond to it” only because they wanted to increase their activity.
What pisses me off is the fact that when you create a question and you have no response, your post is seen as a priority. Once someone comments on it, it is seen as solved.
Therefore, due to those rank starving wolves, sometimes I had to ask again the question in order to get an answer.
Sometimes the same thing happens to me on the Live Chat. It works on the same principle.
At wealthy affiliate, you have a section where it says the stats of your site.
Now, if you take a close look, you will see a feature called Site Trust.
By reading the description, I thought that this feature is directly connected to the search engines and it takes data from them. Well, it is not!!
I have another website on Halloween, and I’ve seen that I gained more and more site trust. Month after month.
At some point, I stopped working on the site and my site trust would still increase. By seeing that, I decided to not work until my website had 60% trust. It was only then when I found out that this value has nothing to do to how much Google and other search engines trust my website.
Therefore, I’ve wasted 5 months just believing that once I get 60% site trust I will earn money.
Don’t get tricked like I did!
Why people say that it is a Scam?
As I mentioned before at the common misleading heading, over 90% of people that call WA a scam fail to understand what it is for.
They believe that the main way to make money with it is to promote it, which is not.
In fact, at Wealthy Affiliate there are a lot of millionaires that earned money with Amazon and other e-commerce websites(all of this is covered by training).
Creating a website about make money online(like I did) is actually one of the worst mistakes that you can make.
The make money online niche, is by far the most overly competitive niche on the internet. I literally have hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions of competitors. Therefore, if you really don’t know how to proper SEO your website and how to create content, you won’t stand a chance. You’ll never get an audience… Lol.
I didn’t believed that until I tried it. It is true!
Therefore, the best thing you can do is to create a website that is focused on a hobby that you like and to develop and to monetize it. All of this is covered in Kyle’s training.
As a fresh Entrepreneur is unlikely to know a long-term plan.
Many of those people that joined, tend to believe that if they work for a month, they will earn better than Bill Gates.
Well, the problem is that it is impossible to earn money within the first month(if you focus only on the organic traffic).
To create a website and to gain authority within a niche it usually takes anywhere between 6-12 months. This is because the search engines need to trust your website in order to rank it in the first page.
Now, you might ask: Why the search engines want this?
Well, imagine that you are leading a billion $ company and that your customers enter through the front door.
Well, you would want their first contact to be with your most experienced employees. I don’t believe that you’d want a intern to talk about business with a million $ investor, right?
Because if he or she screws up, the investor or the customer will go to your competitor.
This is what the search engines( such as: Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yandex etc.) do.
They test your website for a few months in order to see that you publish on a frequent basis and that you write helpful content(which is shared/gains comments etc. from your audience). They won’t risk to lose audience by putting a spammer/scammer/lazy individual on the front page.
So, if you don’t have a network(Fb page/ Twitter/ Youtube/ Instagram/ Pinterest etc.), your main source of traffic will be through organic searches.
This is why this is a long-term investment and why you won’t get great results until the search engines trust your website.
An Online business is exactly as a real world business, the only difference being that it is cheaper to start.
How many times did you earned money by doing nothing?
The same thing happens to an online business. If you don’t work hard for a few months, you will never earn something(unless you invest money in ads…but that’s not the point here).
There are people who join WA, start to create their website, create 2-5 posts a month and expect to earn $5,000 in the first month.
This is impossible. I know that some of you might’ve seen those ads that are saying that you’ll earn $5000 a month by working 2 hours a week.
Well, they are TRUE, but only after you’ve worked for a year or two prior to that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need to invest time in your business. Kyle and other WA millionaires advise you to create a minimum of 2 posts a week. However, I would advise you to start by publishing 2 posts a week and once you get used to it, to start and create 3 posts a week.
It isn’t that hard. Trust me. Once I’ve created 8 posts in 4-5 hours…LOL.
With time you’ll get used to it.
The hard part is that you have to do this for 6-12 months until you start to earn money and to be able to hire a freelancer to write content for you!
There are a lot of successful people that earn money at WA, but there is not a single guy who achieved this while working 2 hours a month.
Kyle provides lots of complex and fully detailed tutorials. However, there are people, like me, that fully rush into it.
People that hate to spend time to learn and eventually start to skip the tutorials and wonder why this is not working and eventually call the system as being a scam.
Kyle has over 12 years experience in making money online with a website and all he teaches needs to be follow. He never adds stuff just because he doesn’t have what to say or what to teach us.
An Online Business is not that easy to start and to develop and he wants to provide step-by-step tutorials such that we won’t go by ourselves and make lots of mistakes and then complain why it is not working…lol.
So, Is The Wealthy Affiliate A Scam Or Not?
Well, the Wealthy Affiliate is legit.
A few reasons why:
1)In general a scam, will charge you an amount of money to try it out.
WA allows you to create a free account without asking for your credit card information.
2) A free membership scam will give you a probation period of 2-4-7 days and after that they will ask you to upgrade.
Indeed, WA asks you if you’d like to upgrade to premium, but it also allows you to deny it and to remain a free membership. You can keep the free membership for lifetime!
3) A scam usually loses its customers in a few weeks/months.
At WA, there are people that have been premium members for more than 10 years and still pay year after year.
4) A scam will never give you access to talk with other members.
WA gives you access to talk to whoever you want. From that friend that joined in the same time with you, to that millionaire, to even Kyle & Carson. See beneath on the Live Chat, Kyle helps people by answering their questions. *He logs in every day and spends anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour to help people out!
5) A classic MLM usually wants to sell you a lot of tutorials(one better than the other& more expensive) in order for you to succeed.
WA just offers a Premium membership which contains everything.
